தென்னை ஆராய்ச்சி நிறுவனம் என்பது 1928 ஆம் ஆண்டு 29 ஆம் இலக்க தெங்கு ஆராய்ச்சி கட்டளைச் சட்டத்தின் கீழ் தென்னை ஆராய்ச்சி திட்டமாக 1929 இல் நிறுவப்பட்ட ஒரு தேசிய நிறுவனமாகும். இத்திட்டம் தனது தலைமையகத்தினை லுணுவில (வட மேல் மாகாணம்) பண்டிரிப்புவ தோட்டத்தில் ஸ்தாபித்ததுடன் தெங்கு பயிர்ச்செய்கை தொடர்பான தொழினுட்ப தகவல்களை தென்னை செய்கையாளர்களுக்கு உதவுவதற்காக பிறப்புரிமையியல், இரசாயனவியல் மற்றும் மண் இரசாயனவியல் ஆகிய மூன்று தொழினுட்ப பிரிவுகளுடன் தனது ஆராய்ச்சி நடவடிக்கைகளை ஆரம்பித்தது. 1950 ஆம் ஆண்டு 37 ம் இலக்க தெங்கு ஆராய்ச்சி சட்டத்தினை தொடர்ந்து இலங்கை தென்னை ஆராய்ச்சி நிறுவனம் என பெயர் மாற்றம் பெற்றது. இந்நிறுவனம் ஸ்தாபிக்கப்பட்டது முதல் இலங்கையின் தென்னை தொடர்பான அனைத்து விஞ்ஞான ரீதியான ஆராய்ச்சிகள் இங்கு மையப்படுத்தப்பட்டன. தென்னை ஆராய்ச்சியில் தேசிய மற்றும் சர்வதேச ரீதியில் நன்மதிப்பை பெற்றுள்ளது. 1971 ம் ஆண்டு வெளியிடப்பட்ட 46 ம் இலக்க தெங்கு அபிவிருத்தி கட்டளைச் சட்டத்தின் கீழ் தென்னை ஆராய்ச்சி நிறுவனத்தின் முகாமைத்துவ சபையாக செயற்படும் பொருட்டு தென்னை ஆராய்ச்சி சபை 1972 இல் நிறுவப்பட்டது. தென்னை ஆராய்ச்சி நிறுவனம் பெருந்தோட்ட தொழிற்துறை அமைச்சின் கீழ் அரை தன்னாட்சி உடைய ஆராய்ச்சி நிறுவனமாகும்.

Among the plant species that have been contributing significantly to the economic and nutritional well-being of the Sri Lankan people for millennia, the coconut tree can be considered an exceptional one. Because of its multiple applications and immense utility, Sri Lankans are well aware of coconut production’s economic, environmental, and social significance. To attain the best yields, economic potential, and industrial viability, coconut cultivation as a perennial crop should undergo additional scientific research, even though it may appear to be a resilient crop that can be cultivated using the most basic technologies. Recently, meeting the demand both domestic and international have presented numerous obstacles for coconut growers and producers.

The Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka conducts research in novel dimensions with the sole goal of ensuring the continued viability of coconut production. As an organization, we aspire to serve our stakeholders to the highest standard possible by conducting effective and efficient research and prioritizing action planning. Our employees are dedicated to working in accordance with a national plan, possessing the knowledge, abilities, and vision required to solve field problems using scientific approaches. By utilizing cutting-edge scientific techniques and intelligent agricultural technology, we seek to offer long-term answers to the issues surrounding local coconut agriculture while maintaining traditional expertise. By collaborating with numerous domestic and foreign organizations, we are attempting to address the issues with the coconut production process by advancing research and obtaining the technical assistance of all sectors involved in coconut farming. We would serve as a center for knowledge transfer to help with technical assistance for innovation. By presenting a new national plan for coconut research, we are prepared to take on the task of using scientific research to increase the production and efficiency of coconut agriculture.
